Thirty-six suburban stations, including 21on Western Railway and 15 on Central Railway , will get a facelift with the help of the non-governmental organizations, Bombay First, and Making a Difference Foundation. The beautification programme is part of the Hamara Station Hamari Shaan initiative to be held during the Daan Utsav period observed from October 2-8. On WR, the stations are between Churchgate and Dahisar, while on CR the initiative will be carried out between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Thane.
Chief executive officer Shishir Joshi, “The smaller stations have a budget of Rs 3 lakh and bigger stations of Rs 5 lakh. The en tire amount has been collected through donations from corporates and crowd-sourcing.“
The event will be formally inaugurated by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu at Bandra station on October 2.
Under the scheme, the stations will be scrubbed clean and painted. Each station will have a unique theme. He said, “For ex ample, Marine Lines will have a theme related to the Koli community , while Lower Parel will reflect the presence of mills and malls, and Vikhroli mangroves.“ Artists will start sketching from Saturday and citizens will later paint them.
