Cloudbursts claim 11 lives in Uttarakhand
Eleven people were killed and 17 who are missing are feared dead after cloudbursts wreaked havoc in Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand on Friday. In Bastadi, dozens of houses have caved in, trapping residents.
The rains also caused landslides in many places. The Met has forecast heavy to very heavy rains across the state over the next 72 hours. Expressing grief over the deaths, PM Modi said, “My prayers are with those injured.“ Heavy rains have caused landslides, blocking ro ads, especially in Chamoli district. Important routes like the Rishikesh-Devprayag road, Chamoli-Nandprayag and Chamoli-Joshimath roads remained closed for several hours on Friday . The Kanalichina-Askot-Dharchula national highway also remained closed due to landslides.
According to disaster management officials at Pithoragarh, a cloudburst brought over 100mm of rainfall in just two hours, affecting Bastadi, Ogla, Singhali, Bhagichura and Askot late on Thursday night. The disaster control room was informed early on Friday morning, after which National Disaster Response Force, ITBP and disaster management teams rushed to the spot. “Didihat tehsil in Pithoragarh is the worst affected, especially Bastadi village,“ C Ravishankar, additional secretary , disaster management department, said. Three of the injured who were rescued from the village have been airlifted to Pithoragarh base hospital. The condition of one of them is reported to be serious.Four others are reported to be trapped in Nachni. State Emergency Operation Centre said the cloudburst caused damage in Thal, Dharchula, Didihat, Gangolihat, Kanalicheena Berinag, Bangapani Davethal and Gannaigangoli areas. A total of 163 families in Naulna Gaun and Nachni have been affected. In Chamoli, bodies of three people washed away were recovered, while six others are reported to be missing.Most of the damage has been reported from Ghat block and Gopeshwar.
Relief and rescue operations have begun in both districts. Santosh Badoni, deputy secretary , disaster management department, said, “A 40member team of NDRF, has been air-dropped to Pithoragarh to begin rescue operations.SDRF, ITBP and SSB have also reached the spot.“
