From next week, movement of heavy vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be banned at specific timings on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays besides on public holidays.
This decision was taken recently to put an end to traffic jams on the Expressway on weekends to facilitate smooth flow of light motor vehicles, especially in the Khandala ghat section. However, heavy vehicles ferrying essential commodities will be allowed to ply.
Heavy vehicles from Mumbai to Pune will be stopped at Khalapur toll post between 5pm and 10pm on Fridays and between 7am and 12pm on Saturdays. On the journey from Pune to Mumbai, heavy vehicles will be halted at Urse and Kusgaon toll posts only on Mondays between 7am and 10am. There will be no ban on Sundays. On public holidays, a flexible timetable will be implemented. This schedule is still to be worked out.
The police said that heavy vehicles often develop technical snags while ascending the ghat or meet with accidents in the ghat section, especially at Amrutanjan Bridge. This blocks traffic movement during rush hour on weekends.
