The MSRTC plans to procure 500 air-conditioned buses on rent, which will be deployed on long-distance routes, including the Mumbai-Pune corridor. Of these, 20 buses will be sleeper coaches with 30 sleepers in each bus, sources said.
The buses will be ferried on routes across the state, mainly connecting Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur to other disticts as well as for inter-state travel, sources said.
A prototype of the bus, which will be named `Shivshahi’, was brought to the Mumbai Central bus depot on Saturday for inspection. Officials said the decision to place the order was in the final stages and MSRTC would soon decide the bus manufacturing firmoperator from whom they will procure the buses.
As per the proposed rent model, drivers will be provided by the suppliers of the buses, while the conductors will be those employed with MSRTC.The transport undertaking will have no liability as far as bus maintenance is concerned as it will have to simply pay the monthly rent to the operator. The earnings from the buses will go to the state transport undertaking’s coffers.
