IPL brand is worth about Rs 27,000 crore

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has claimed that the IPL brand is worth $4.5 billion (about Rs 27,000 crore).In its annual report for 201516, the board has said this figure was given by valuation appraisal firm Duff & Phelps last year.

“According to the Broadcast Audience Research Council of India, the total TV viewership of IPL 2016 calculated by impressions stood at 102 crore. A report by management consultancy firm KPMG puts the total impact of IPL 2015 on the Indian economy at Rs 1,150 crore, more than 0.6% of the country’s GDP,“ states the report. BCCI has floated an open tender for IPL global media rights (TV and digital) for 10 years, with the digital rights available for half that period. Leading sports broadcasters like Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) and Star Sports are in the fray for the rights, while e-commerce giant Amazon has also picked up the tender document.

“IPL has been the fastestgrowing league in the world, and has changed the landscape of domestic sport in the country .

“Numbers prove that the IPL has set a benchmark and at the BCCI, we’re extremely proud of this,“ BCCI president Anurag Thakur told TOI on Thursday .

BCCI has claimed that net viewership of the league hit the 100 million mark this year.Its followers on Twitter grew by 300% between 2014 and 2016, according to the board, which claimed that this would make it the fastest growing sporting league on social media.
