The Bombay high court on Wednesday quashed and set aside a notification of state government which directed teachers across Maharashtra be deployed to conduct house-to-house survey to prepare and update the National Population Register (NPR).

A bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Amjad Sayed heard petition by Maharashtra Rajya Prathmik Shikshak Sangh and other teacher bodies challenging the notification and notices to several teachers asking them to show cause why they should not be prosecuted for refusing to undertake NPR duty . The judges said that the August 26 notification directing teachers to work as enumerators will be contrary section 27 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
