Mamata gets US invite
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been invited to the US by Thomas A Shannon Jr, undersecretary of state for political affairs.
In 2012, secretary of state Hillary Clinton had invited Mamata during her visit to Writers’ Buildings. In 2011, soon after becoming chief minister, she was invited by Harvard University’s history department, but could not go.
The visit by a US undersecretary is considered signifi cant as it is indicative of America’s interest in political developments in Bengal, say sources. Though many consider this a courtesy call, Mamata took the opportunity to attract fo reign investment. The discussions centred on issues related to investment, development and the Turkey terror attack, say sources.
Officials do not rule out the possibility of Mamata visiting US scouting for investment. She invited the US President to visit Bengal, but officials could not say if it was an invite for Obama or the next President.
Shannon said their talks were based on technology , culture, social media and education. “The tie with Bengal will increase in the future,“ he said
