JEE board scraps 60|40 weightage for admissions
The Joint Entrance Examination Apex Board (JAB) has given nod to the 31 National Institutes of Technology , Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur, IIITs and Government Technology Institutes to scrap the existing 6040 weightage formula for admissions.
Candidates vying for seats in any of these institutes will have to secure a minimum 75% marks in the higher secondary (HS) examination or rank among the top 20 percentile students in their respective board exams. This will be the minimum criterion to qualify for a seat apart from the rank secured in the entrance test.
IITs and ISM-Dhanbad follow the same criteria for admissions: only after mee ting the cutoffs, a student finds a seat through counselling at IITs based on their IIT-JEE (Advanced) rank.
“At present, candidates can qualify for a seat based on their board marks and their score in the JEE-Main exam. The minimum criteria is to pass in all subjects in HS and secure 45% in each subject. The 6040 weightage means 60 weightage is on the JEE score and the 40 weightage is on board exam results. This will be no longer be valid from the 2017 examination. Instead, the new rule will apply,“ said a senior JAB member. I IT-Kharagpur director Pa rtha Pratim Chakrabarti said a circular was issued to notify the qualifying rules.“The HRD ministry has given the nod to the JAB proposal. The JEE Main rank will now depend on the new criteria. If students fail to meet the HS score cutoff, their entrance test rank will be nullified,“ an NIT director said.
All institutes are likely to admit candidates based on same entrance exam as IITs.“We will decide if the institutes -NITs, IIITs, GTIs and IIEST–will admit students from IIT-JEE (Advanced) or there will be another test. For now, JEE Main is unli-kely to be scrapped as many state institutes use the ranks. By 2017-end, a decision will be taken,“ the official said.
“We need a full-proof mechanism that can happen through a single test,“ an official said. JAB is likely to soon take a call soon.
