Calcutta HC to be renamed after Kolkata
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved renaming the high courts of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras after the current names of the cities -Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. The government will bring a bill in Parliament to effect the change. Calcutta HC is the first high court of India, set up on July 1, 1862. The Bombay and Madras HCs followed a few months later.
Anglo-Indian MLA may be named on Friday
With the race for an Anglo Indian nominated member to the state assembly hotting up, Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee is likely to pick her choice “very soon“, possibly before the weekend. While the party is officially mum on it, it has been learnt several key personalities are in the fray for this five-year MLA term, including the incumbent Michael Shane Calvert.
Though a frontrunner for a second-term, Calvert may find it difficult as he has to compete with Calcutta Boys’ School principal Raja McGee, St James principal Terence Hamilton Ireland, Frank Anthony Public School principal Ian Theodore Myers–he also heads the Bengal chapter of All India Anglo Indian Association–and Denise Smith, first woman president of the 150-year-old Dalhousie Institute (DI). Never before the choice had been so tough with such important and versatile candidates joining the contest.
Article 333 of Constitution says the “Governor of a State may , if he is of opinion that the Anglo Indian community needs representation in the Legislative Assembly of the State and is not adequately represented therein, nominate one member of that community to the Assembly“. Since 1971, the state has been appointing one such member to the state assembly .
Though the Trinamool regime is, apparently , not exactly happy with Calvert, but it feels he needs to do more to reach out to the community at the grassroots level and redress their grievances. He appears to be slightly ahead in the race, given his experience and proximity to the ruling party . But a senior party functionary remained noncommittal. “The final decision rests on the party chief,“ a leader said, indicating the announcement could be made on Friday .
