Bridge collapse cuts off access to Niti valley
A Bailey bridge -a lattice steel structure assembled from prefabricated parts, used especially in military operations -which was the only means for vehicles to reach the Niti Valley near the China border, collapsed on Tuesday cutting off road access for the defence forces to the strategically important valley which has 14 villages along the border.
The bridge, which was con structed after the 1962 war with China, was located in the Suraithota area of Chamoli district on the Joshimath-Malari national highway route. It collapsed while a truck of the Border Roads Organisation was going over it. Three labourers inside it escaped with minor injuries. The bridge was used extensively by the Army and ITBP personnel.
