TMC support may help break GST deadlock
A move from the Centre to take a leap towards a countrywide unified tax system -Goods and Services Tax (GST) -that started in 2009 when Pranab Mukherjee was the Union finance minister is likely to take shape in a meeting of the GST panel beginning Tuesday in Kolkata with state finance minister Amit Mitra as chairman.
The meeting assumes significance after CM Mamata Banerjee took a proactive role and threw her weight behind finance minister Arun Jaitley in a meeting of the chambers held a few days ago. Mamata’s support is important because BJP doesn’t have the numbers to ensure safe passage of the Bill in Rajya Sabha.
