The Left-run Kultali panchayat samity in South 24-Parganas fell to the Trinamool Congress blitz on Saturday with 13 CPM members ditching the party and joining the ruling party ranks. Among those who joined the Trinamool during the day was panchayat sabhapati Shyamapada Naiya. Trinamool block secretary Saikat Sasmal said that Naiya would retain his position.
The Kultali panchayat samity has 27 seats.Originally , the CPM held 18 of them and the RSP had one. The SUCI had six seats and the Trinamool two. After the results were announced, RSP member Sailen Gayen switched sides. After Saturday’s washout, the CPM now has barely four seats in the panchayat samity . Trinamool has 17 and the SUCI has held on to its six.
“The process started before the Assembly elections. We did not manipulate anything. They joined us with their own interests in mind,“ Sasmal said.
CPM district committee secretary Sujan Chakraborty said that these people have not been able to uphold the principles of the party .
