Come October 1, Aadhaar card registration will be a state government function. As of now, the registration is being done by the census department but due to poor footfalls in the 640 special centres, the census department has shifted them under the care of the state government and in another two months, they will be part of e-seva centres.
The state government’s IT department will take care of the biometric registration and will be sending the data to UIDAI for releasing Aadhaar cards. The Census department will focus on just the Census functions henceforth.More than 95% of the residents of the state have Aadhaar cards and biometric registration in the state has crossed 100% of the 2011population.
“We are spending Rs 34 per person to get their biometric registration and the Centre’s census department allocated several crores of rupees each month. In the last few months, the footfalls in these centres have come down. But, we continue to spend several crores of rupees even though the registrations did not reach the target,“ said a senior census department official. For each permanent centre, the Census department was spending not less than `50,000 per month. The department also paid“5,000 to the state government for electricity and for use of state department office.
After a new chief of the census department took charge, he directed the local department to close all the centres as it was not possible for the Centre to spend so much money for their upkeep.
