Trinamool likely to be main oppn in Tripura
Trinamool Congress (TMC) is on its way to becoming the largest opposition party in the Tripura assembly.
Six dissident Congress MLAs appeared before assembly speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath on Thursday and reiterated their allegiance to TMC. The speaker will hear state Congress president Birajit Sinha’s deposition against the rebel MLAs on July 4, but he said TMC might be given the status of main opposition party in the assembly .
Over the past three days, Debnath held meetings with Sudip Roy Barman, Pranajit Singha Roy , Asish Saha, Dilip Sarkar and DC Hrankhwal over their willingness to join TMC. The sixth Congress dissident, Jitendra Sarkar, had earlier resigned from the assembly and joined CPM.
Meanwhile, Sinha has already written to the speaker requesting him to disqualify all the rebel MLAs.
Congress, which had 10 legislators in the 60-member assembly , is now down to three Birajit Sinha, Ratan Lal Nath and Gopal Roy . TMC has double that number and the Left Front has 50 members in the 60-member assembly .
Even if TMC is given the tag of largest opposition party, it will not be offered the post of opposition leader. According to rule, a party needs onesixth of the total assembly strength to send a leader of the opposition and TMC doesn’t have the numbers.
