If Thursday’s afternoon rain threw life out of gear in Kolkata, brace for more rain in the next 48 hours. With a deep depression forming over Bay of Bengal, the city is likely to receive moderate showers. The system is currently stationed at central and west central of Bay of Bengal, nearly 1,000kms from Kolkata. It is moving in the north-west direction.
The periodic but moderate showers were the immediate impact of the system on the city . The deep depression may turn into a cyclone if it intensifies further. “It is too early to predict the course the system. It may hit the Bangladesh coast, but we are not sure,“ said G K Das, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Alipore. Till 5.30pm , the city had 37.7 mm rain. Thursday’s rainfall was uniformly spread across the city , leaving low-lying parts of the city waterlogged. A similar rainfall is expected over the next two days unless the depression weakens or change course.
