The state transport department has extended the provisional licence for app cabs till December 14, allaying fears of a crackdown on the popular mode of commute during the festive season.Though the term of the earlier licence had expired on September 14, some app cab platforms like Uber have been unable to apply for a renewal as the transport department had set stiff conditions including installation of CCTV camera in the cabin.

The announcement on the provisional licence extension was made by advocate general Jayanta Mitra during a hearing on a case at Calcutta high court. Uber and Ramlan Singh, an ownercum-driver, had filed two separate petitions challenging the notifications issued by the state government on October 16, 2015 and December 7, 2015, that had laid down conditions like compulsory installation of CCTV for the licence renewal.
