Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has decided to follow the Supreme Court’s Singur land-return order in “letter and spirit“ and hence wants Tata Motors to voluntarily dismantle its unfinished factory sheds occupying over 49 acres so that the plots can be given back to their rightful owners.
She has tasked finance minister Amit Mitra to get in touch with the automaker and request it to remove the sheds immediately . Failing this, the gov ernment will “clear the land“ on its own. The CM believes the move won’t create any misunderstanding with the Tatas since she is only obeying the apex court directive.
“The Supreme Court order has made it clear that the entire land belongs to its owners, and not to anybody else. It has directed the government to return the land to its owners. I will ask Amitda (finance minister) to talk to the authorities to take away whatever is there occupying the land. We will wait for a day or two for their response. If it doesn’t work out, the government will clear the land and keep the materials in the custody of the district magistrate. The government will send a progress report to the apex court,“ Mamata said on Monday .
