Mamata Banerjee has reasons to be happy on Wednesday when the Singur saga comes full circle with the government beginning the land-return process of the deserted Nano plant from the very place where the Trinamool chief had launched her indefinite land-return dharna in August 2008.
Equally happy are sections of landowners who are among the compensation awardees. They have planned to pull down the bounda ry wall of the Nano project near Beraberi Purbapara and walk through their own plots to the CM’s meeting.
Landowners will occupy the left flank of Durgapur Expressway , leaving the other flank to motorists. A 48-feet by 13-feet dais has been set up for Mamata at Sahanapara, reminiscent of the days of the indefinite dharna.
But this time, the militant mood will give way to celebrations mixed with apprehension about Singur’s future. Schools in Singur have de clared a holiday on We dnesday. A list of 197 names reached the Beraberi gram panchayat’s office on Monday evening. Of them, a select few will receive the compensation cheque from the CM. The administration has announced nine other centres from where the remaining 800 farmers can collect theirs.
Landowner Rathin Das of Beraberi Purbapara said, “We have been waiting for 10 years to get our land back. The land now belongs to us. We will pull down the project wall and enter our land in the morning.“
The enthusiasm, however, died down at Gopalnagar Madhyapara and Joymollah, where some unwilling farmers are upset with Mamata denying anything extra to the declared compensation. “Farmers as a whole are happy . But many want at least the interest on compensation for the last 10 years after their land was acquired in 2006. Some are worried if they can go back to farming. They want industry ,“ said Trinamool leader and Beraberi gram panchayat pradhan Dipankar Ghosh.
Trinamool heavyweights Partha Chatterjee, Sovon Chatterjee and Firhad Hakim visited the site on Tuesday and held a meeting with villagers. Many who voluntarily gave up their land to Tata are yet to hear from the administration about their land return.
