The Mamata Banerjee government is going to set up a new convention centre -Soujonya or Kolkata House -on Judge’s Court Road in Alipore. The initial budget for the project was set at Rs 26 crore, but the final estimate can be over Rs 70 crore when it will be completed in middle of 2017, said government officials. The convention centre will be used for organising multiple conferences at the same time.
Officials at Nabanna said that the budget cost increased due to change in design plan and doubling of the construction area of Soujanya. National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) was given the contract to set up the convention centre way back in March 2014. Nabanna officials said that the budget might go over Rs 70 crore because as per the contract NBCC is likely to charge agency charges at the rate of 7% over the total estimated cost, as per norms.
Initially the plan was to set up 50,370 sq ft with G+2 building, but now it has been changed with basement being introduced in the plan. “The total built-up area will now be over 1 lakh sq ft,“said an official.
