Atletico de Kolkata fans may be deprived of the pleasure of watching their team play at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium if a committee set up by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Eastern Zone Bench, on Thursday , reports back that night matches there will adversely affect the bio-diversity around the nearby lake.
ISL matches were held at the Salt Lake’s Yuba Bharati Krirangan till 2015. The venue was shifted to Rabindra Sarobar as the stadium is being prepared for the Under-17 World Cup football next year.
The green bench of Justice S P Wangdi and Prof P C Mishra was hearing a plea by environment activist Subhas Datta against holding of night matches at Rabindra Sarobar. “The pla ce, which is under the National Lake Conservation Scheme, has a variety of indigenous birds, migratory birds and aquatic species.
It is a better option not to hold such an event there during the night,“ Datta submitted. He also pointed to the large number of motor vehicles that would be parked nearby during the matches and the use of fireworks.
