Prices of vegetable are burning a hole in Kolkatans’ pockets with the cost of some items doubling in a matter of six months.Though the onset of monsoon did see a slash in the price tag, the amounts have again shot up.
According to recent data released by the Centre, within a month, the wholesale price index (WPI) increased to a 23-month high of 3.55% in July from 1.62% in June nationwide. Going by the commerce ministry data, an overall food basket showed a double-digit inflation of 11.68%.
Pradip Mazumdar, agriculture adviser to the chief minister, however, declined to admit there had been much cost escalation.
