Bimal Gurung’s Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) lost a member on Wednesday with party vice-president and Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) sabha chairman Bhupendra Pradhan dumping the party to join Trinamool at a public meeting held at Gurung’s hometown Kurseong.
Pradhan is the second GJM leader after Harka Bahadur Chetri to have left the party , giving enough indications that things are not all that well in GJM.
Pradhan, in fact, took a step further than Chetri, who chose to stay independent keeping in mind the sentiments of the Hills people for a separate state that Mamata Banerjee’s party is opposed to.
“I know I am joining a party that is opposed to the separate statehood demand. But then, Gurung and his party are not sincere about it. I am a Gorkha and still want a separate state, but I am ready to extend support to an honest leader for the development of the Hills. I am confident that GJM will never take up the statehood demand seri ously,“ Pradhan said.
Speculation over Pradhan’s joining Trinamool was rife since Tuesday after the GTA sabhasad called on the CM at Sukhna.
When asked about the reason for his quitting GJM, Pradhan said: “I was a GTA sabhasad from Kurseong, but could do little for my constituency . I have thus joined Trinamool Congress. I won’t hesitate to leave Trinamool as well if this party fails to deliver the goods.“
GTA deputy chairman Lopsang Lama said he has received applications from 35 GTA sabhasads urging him to call a meeting and remove Pradhan from the chairman’s post.
