The banks of Bagjola canal, located near the upcoming international convention centre at New Town, is set for a facelift, complete with a floating market in the waters. This is part of the beautification plan that the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco), along with the irrigation department, has taken up for the 2km stretch along the canal.

For the project–being firmed up following chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s advice to upgrade the waterfront–the irrigation department will carry out a survey to look into the quality of the water and ways to improve it. According to state officials, Mamata wants to beautify the Bagjola canal banks as it is located right beside the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, slated for inauguration early next year. The CM wanted to “lend an international look and feel to the entire area near the convention centre“ to offer the visiting foreign dignitaries a “befitting view“ of the township, an official said.
