Mayor of Chittoor municipal corporation Katari Anuradha was shot dead by unidentified miscreants on Tuesday noon. Her husband Mohan also received bullet injuries and is undergoing treatment in a critical condition.
A gang of burqua clad men entered the municipal corporation office at around 12 in the noon and shot Anuradha from a close range killing her on the spot. The miscreants then attacked Mohan with knives and injured him critically. The attackers fled the scene after the incident. Police launched a manhunt. The hired killers are believed to have come from Bengaluru.
The mayor couple belongs to the ruling Telugu Desam Party and it is suspected that a group within the party could have been behind the murder. Katari Mohan was an accused in an attempt to murder case of Chittoor ex-MLA CK Babu who is a TDP leader.
It is also learnt that the mayor family had some disputes with close relatives and that could be a reason behind the murder of Anuradha. Further investigation is on.
