The state government has asked district collectors to complete selection and distribution of free cellphones to targeted women Kisan Credit Card (KCC) holders by October-end, official sources said. The programme launched by chief minister Naveen Patnaik in August aims to provide marketing information to women farmers, through SMS or voice message in their handsets, on agriculture and marketing of their produce.
The government has set a target to distribute handsets to over 41,000 women KCC holders under this programme in the state. The official order fixed selection criteria and total number of beneficiaries to be selected from each district. It also pointed out proper formation of district level selection committee chaired by district collector to select targeted beneficiaries under the programme. The women KCC holders, who are supposed to be the progressive farmers, may be given preference for selection, said the government order from additional secretary of the cooperation department, Premananda Khuntia. He said secretary of the central cooperative banks will communicate the list of such women KCC holders to the collector for selection of beneficiaries by the district committee.
