The Odisha government on Monday sought a tribunal under the Interstate Water Dispute Act, 1956 to solve the Mahanadi water sharing dispute with Chhattisgarh. The move finally brings all major political parties in Odisha on the same page on the issue because an all-party meeting (not attended by the BJD) on August 3 had suggested such a tribunal. Both the Congress and the BJP welcomed the state’s move, but criticised the delay in taking such a decision.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said the state filed a complaint petition to the Centre under Section 3 of the Act for formation of the tribunal. “I requested the Prime Minister to expedite the same,” Patnaik said.
