After the state government failed to appease different categories of disgruntled schoolteachers, hundreds of block grant high schoolteachers on Thursday took out a rally in front of the assembly demanding abolition of block grant system, pay parity with government teachers and other service benefits. The agitating teachers said they would boycott the panchayat elections to be held in February 2017 if the government fails to fulfil their demands.
“The state government had recently called us to discuss these issues, but they didn’t give us any written assurance. By ow, we have become used to such assurances. Nothing ever comes out of them. This time, around 35000 teachers of 2608 block grant high schools and families of the children studying in these schools will boycott the coming panchayat elections,” said Prasanta Mohapatra, general secretary of Block Grant Secondary Teachers and Employees Association.
