Despite having a wealth of ancient monuments, Odisha has failed to identify and conserve its shrines, the CAG has pointed out. The report, tabled in the assembly on Monday, pointed out that there was no comprehensive survey for identifying and declaring monuments as protected.
While the documentation was poor, technical experts were not engaged despite specific directions from the government. The 13th finance commission had recommended Rs 65 crore central aid to the state for conservation of monuments. However, due to absence of a comprehensive list of ancient structures, the state failed to prepare action plan in the stipulated time of March 2015.
