Infosys SEZ all set to boot up in Mohali
With the Centre giving its consent to Infosys to set up the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the tech giant is expected to start ground work on its Mohali IT campus. The government approved four SEZs last month, including the Mohali SEZ of Infosys.
Proposed to be spread over an area of 50 acres in the upcoming IT City near International Airport, Infosys IT campus, the second in the Tricity after Chandigarh, will be the biggest in the region.
According to Punjab industries department officials, the IT SEZ will be built in phases and ground work will start in the next few months. Work on the first phase was expected to be finished in 24 months, said a department official. In the first phase, built up area of 6.5 lakh sq feet will be created to employ 5,000 software professionals at an estimated cost of about Rs 425 crore.
Once completed and fully operational, the SEZ is expected to house 20,000 software professionals. A senior government official said Infosys applied for single-window clearance from the Punjab government and the first level has already been approved. The tech company’s second campus is to come up in Mohali. The first campus in Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park is spread over an area of 30 acres with a capacity of 6,000 employees. It has been operational since 2006.
Punjab gover nment signed an MoU with Infosys in 2013 agreeing on an IT SEZ. In 2014, the state government allotted 50 acres of land to the company for the SEZ. The same year, Infosys announced that it would commence work on the campus after the foundation stone was laid by Punjab deputy CM Sukhbir Badal in the presence of company co-founder N R Narayana Murthy
