Tamil Nadu has slipped to the 18th rank in the state-wise `Ease of Doing Business’ rankings released by the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) of the Union ministry of commerce and industry on Monday . The state, which stood 12th in the rankings last year, has fallen behind even Bihar that is far less industrialised.
Tamil Nadu got a score of 62.8% in the latest rankings, much lower than top-ranked neighbour Andhra Pradesh that scored 98.78% and Karnataka, 88.39%.
The state has been ranked outside the top-5 in key reform areas such as construction permit enablers, obtaining electricity connection and availability of land.
TN continues to be under the category of states, which have been classified as `acceleration required’. However, it has done better than Delhi, Kerala, Goa, the North-Eastern states and Jammu & Kashmir. The rankings are on the basis of a 340-point business action plan and their implementation by states. States and UTs with a score of 40%-70% have been put under `acceleration required’ category by the DIPP . Himachal Pradesh (HP) and the UT of Delhi along with TN come under this category . The ease of doing business rankings for last year also classified TN under the `acceleration required’ group along with eight other states. In fact, TN has done better than only Delhi, Kerala, Goa, the NorthEastern states and Jammu and Kashmir in the ease of doing business rankings this year.
