September has begun with a bang for Chennai, as thundershowers pounded the streets late on Thursday evening recording about 40mm of rain in just one hour. The 55mm received in the downpour that started at 7.30pm was more than the 44.3mm rainfall received for the whole of August. There may be more rainfall on Friday evening, weathermen have predicted.
The rainfall on Thursday came as a relief after a dry August left the city basking in searing heat with temperatures rising above 38°C.Thursday began with a high temperature which peaked to 36.4°C around 1.30pm. “Convergence of winds, thanks to the moisture present in the atmosphere caused the heavy downpour,“ said area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran. “Thundershowers are normal during the season. Rainfall is again expected on Friday,“ he said.
