Woman ill-treated in Saudi receives financial assistance
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday gave fixed deposit receipts for `10 lakh to Dakshayani Uma Shankar, of Sivaji Nagar in Tondiarpet, who suffered serious injuries while trying to escape the ill-treatment meted out to her by her employer in Saudi Arabia.
Dakshayani, along with her mother K Devaki, met chief minister J Jayalalithaa at the secretariat and received the receipts. She will get `8,125 every month generated from the monthly interest for the amount deposited in her name at a nationalized bank.
The 28-year-old suffered severe spinal cord injuries after she jumped off the balcony of her employer’s house in Saudi Arabia on May 7 this year. After she reached Chennai on June 16 with the help of an NGO based in Saudi Arabia, the chief minister promised to provide her with financial aid. She underwent treatment at Stanley Government Hospital here.
Dakshayani jumped from the first floor balcony of her employer Alsa Mohammad’s residence in Dammam a month after she started working there in March, said officials. After spending over a month in a Saudi hospital, she was flown back home to Chennai on June 16, with a steel plate in her back and shattered dreams. After meeting Jayalalithaa at the secretariat, an elated Dakshayani said, “I have no words to elaborate except to say `Thanks’. I owe a lot to Amma. I am staying at a rented house paying `3,000 per month. This money would help me and my joint family a lot.“
Speaking about her ordeal, she said, “It was a nightmare for me, as I was never allowed to sleep for more than two hours in the night.“
Her employer left her in the rain for four hours after she jumped down and broke her back. “Then the employer’s brother took me to a hospital. After one month’s treatment, the employer insisted that the doctors allow me to return to work at their house. When I refused, a doctor referred me to an NGO and through their help, I returned home safely,“ said Dakshayani.
