Free laptops meant to be distributed to Class 12 students in the beginning of the academic year, were given to students at the end of the session, due to delayed release of funds to the government’s Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), the CAG report tabled in the assembly on Friday revealed.
It said 5,400 students in 33 schools got laptops two to 12 months after the end of academic year 2012-13. Similarly , 5,882 students of 36 schools were distributed laptop computers two to seven months after the end of the academic year 2013-14. Quoting the purchase orders, the report said there was a belated finalization of suppliers and release of funds to ELCOT , which delayed the distribution of laptops to students.
The CAG report found that there were also losses due to theft of laptops in schools and colleges.Out of 724 laptops stolen from schools, 128 were traced. In respect of 38 laptops, a sum of `5.7 lakh was recovered from officials, but the rest remained untraceable for which police complaint has been lodged.
