`Gethu’ not Tamil; HC stays tax exemption
About a month after a single judge ordered entertainment tax exemption to Udhyanidhi Stalin-starred Tamil film, `Gethu’, a division bench stayed the verdict.
A bench of Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice N Kirubakaran passed the interim order, on an appeal filed by the directorate of Tamil development. In its appeal, the department said its investigation had revealed that the word `Gethu’ had its origin in Kannada, and that it ought to have been spelled `Kethu’ to qualify as Tamil word.
It contended that the phonetic difference between the words `Gethu’ and `Kethu’ would give two entirely different meanings, and hence the single judge had erred in treating the former as a Tamil word.
During hearing, the bench observed that the entertainment tax benefit was not meant for films having Tamil titles alone. It is an incentive for a film promoting Tamil culture overall, it said.
