Tamil Nadu will not have local body polls on October 17 or 19, as a division bench of the Madras high court did not interfere with a single judge’s Wednesday order quashing the September 26 poll notification.
After getting no direct reply to its query -What is your immediate prayer? -the bench adjourned the appeal filed by the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission against the cancellation of poll notification to October 18.
The original petition was filed by DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi. On Wednesday , the single judge set aside the notification say ing Rule 24 of the Tamil Nadu Panchayats (Elections) Rules had not been complied with by the SEC which issued only a single notification instead of releasing two including a public notice. It also noticed several other grave anomalies and concluded that the SEC had not ensured a level playing field for parties. It also or dered the government to appoint special officers to administer local bodies beyond October 24, when the fiveyear tenure of the present representatives ends.
