A sudden downpour in the city caught those on the streets unawares around 8.30pm on Thursday . People returning from work were held up in many areas.
There was rain in almost all neighbourhoods in south and central Chennai as well as suburbs like Tambaram and Kelambakkam on ECR and OMR. Weathermen say more rain is likely, especially in the late evening and night.
The Regional Meterological Centre had predicted that strong winds would blow through the city and perhaps bring thundershowers in some areas late at night. Initially, weather bloggers said Tambaram and areas furt her south would receive rain around 7.30pm. Dark clouds hovered over certain parts of the city through the day . Later in the evening, strong winds brought these clouds towards the city , causing the short spell of rain. It rained for more than an hour at Pallavaram and Chromepet.
Winds gathered strength.Meenambakkam recorded gusts of 46.3kmph and Nungambakkam registered winds of 40.2kmph, weather experts said. R Pradeep John, a weather blogger who posts updates under the name Tamil Nadu Weatherman, said the city would continue to get rain for the next week at night.
Residents were overjoyed with the cool weather, but also a bit worried about the strong winds. “It is the perfect weather for a hot and spicy soup with dinner. If it had rained a couple of hours earlier, we could have enjoyed tea and chilli bajjis,“ said 28year-old Siddharth R, a realty professional working in RA Puram.
Many residents posted on social media platforms that trees had fallen in their neighbourhoods, but there were no updates from corporation officials.
