In a visit that caught political circles by surprise, Rahul Gandhi flew down to Chennai to visit chief minister Jayalalithaa at Apollo Hospitals on Friday .Rahul Gandhi, who arrived at the hospital by noon, spent nearly 40 minutes on the tightly guarded premises.Emerging from the hospital, he said, “The chief minister is improving well and she is going to be all right.“
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president S Thirunavukkarasar, once a trusted lieutenant of Jayalalithaa (post the MGR era), received Rahul Gandhi at the airport and drove with him to the hospital where the CM was under treatment since September 22. Finance minister O Panneerselvam also dropped in at the hospital. Congress partymen in the state said Rahul Gandhi’s visit was a `humanitarian’ one.Sources said Rahul Gandhi alone was allowed to see the CM while Thirunavukarasar waited out. Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Apollo Hospitals founder-chairman Dr Prathap Reddy and other doctors. The team of doctors gave Gandhi a detailed account of the chief minister’s health.
