Jaya sacks defeated former ministers from party posts
In a major purge post-poll, AIADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday restructured her party organization, removing from posts several former ministers, who were defeated in the assembly election.
Former electricity minister Natham R Viswanathan has been replaced by mayor V Marutharaj as Dindigul secretary . While the AIADMK leader retained her once-trusted lieutenant O Panneerselvam as party treasurer, his son P Raveendranath kumar has been removed from the post of secretary of Theni district Ilaignar, Ilam Pengal Pasarai (a forum of young men and women). Panneerselvam’s rival in his home turf, Andipatti MLA S Thanga Tamilselvan will now head the Theni district unit, a move seen as an attempt to dilute the clout of the OPS family in the region.
Jayalalithaa announced a revised list of 38 office-bearers aimed at revitalising the party in the run-up to the civic poll, which is just months away .While she retained senior leader E Madhusoodanan as party presidium chairman, 10 former ministers were removed from key party posts. They include C Ponnaiyan, P Palaniappan, Panruti S Ramachandran and P Mohan, and many organizing secretaries of the party . Ramachandran, who was DMDK presidium chairman, had resigned as MLA and quit the party to join AIADMK in February 2014. Gokula Indira, who was defeated in Anna Nagar constituency , has been replaced by Rajya Sabha MP Vijila Sathyananth as women’s wing secretary .
Jayalalithaa changed secretaries in districts where her party suffered big losses and where in-fighting led to defeats of her candidates. “The party suffered its worst setback in Chennai, an effect of the December deluge, losing ten seats to DMK. We have to strengthen our campaign here for the local body election,“ said a senior leader, justifying the appointment of former slum clearance board chairman N Balanganga and former MLA V P Kalairajan as secretaries of the North Chennai south unit and South Chennai north unit, respectively .
District office-bearers of Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram in the northern belt have been changed in view of defeats of AIADMK candi dates here. With the defeat of party candidates in all six constituencies in Kanyakumari district, former minister N Thalavaisundaram has been replaced by A Vijayakumar, elected in the recent RS polls, as district secretary. But, Thalavaisundaram has been appointed as organising secretary of the party.
Ulundurpet MLA R Kumaraguru, who trounced DMDK leader Vijayakant in the assembly poll, has been rewarded with the post of Villupuram south district secretary .
Three ministers, K C Karupannan, M R Vijayabaskar and M Manikandan will now head Erode Rural, Karur, and Ramanathapuram units. Jayalalithaa has also dissolved the party’s disciplinary and petitions committees, besides removing the secretaries and joint secretaries of all 234 assembly constituencies. Citing anti-party activities in the Niligiris district, where the party could scrape through in one of the three seats, she expelled six functionaries from primary membership and another 13 from party posts. The party also announced 14 spokespersons, including RS MPs S R Balasubramonian and R Vaithilingam.
