South-bound trains to get faster from Oct
From October 1, train travel from Chennai to any southern TN destination is bound to be faster by 30 minutes to 1 hour. Southern Railway general manager Vashishtha Johri on Friday said a majority of trains from Chennai Egmore and Central would be speeded up as doubling of Chennai-Madurai section is nearing completion.
The first step was taken on Friday when officials announced that two pairs of trains, the Chennai-Rameswaram Express and ChennaiJodhpur Express would be upgraded to superfast status, increasing the average speed to more than 55 kmph and bringing down the journey time by at least one hour each.
As TOI reported a month ago, almost all trains from places like Madurai, Trivandrum, Trichy and Guruvayur had the capacity to reach Chennai at least an hour before schedule. They were detained at intermediate stations to kill time. Officials didn’t decrease journey time to give cushion for rare enroute failures, resulting in wastage of crores of rupees on electrification and doubling.A km of doubling with electrification costs about 8 crore.
Less than 100km of the electrified 497km ChennaiMadurai section remains to doubled. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, the railways’ engineering arm, is completing the remaining work at pace. The average speed of trains increased after the Chennai-Villupuram section, a major bottleneck, was doubled.
After the report appeared, senior officials made inspections and discovered the extraordinary cushion time given to trains. A peculiar case of trains arriving Chennai on time despite track failure or delays due to derailment was noted by people like the chief passenger transportation manager and chief operations manager. Special committees were formed to cut down the cushion time and pass the benefit to passengers, Johri acknowledged on Friday .
He stressed that the zone would concentrate on providing passenger amenities like escalators at the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations in Chennai.
Divisional Railway Manager Anupam Sharma said Chepauk and Chintadripet stations would get new escalators in the next eight months and speed restrictions on the section would continue till November.
