Madras univ colleges to add 5,000 seats this yr
Here is something to cheer for students seeking admission to arts and science colleges: University of Madras has decided to increase the student intake this year by up to 20%.
Private colleges affiliated to the university can admit 10% more students, aided colleges can have a 15% increase in intake, and government colleges can take in 20% more than the sanctioned number, a resolution passed by the university syndicate on Monday said. This would add about 5,000 seats to the pool of Madras University which has about 100 affiliated arts and science colleges.
This is in view of the increased demand for arts and science courses and indicates a shift of student preference from engineering, said university registrar David P Jawahar. “Queues for buying admission forms outside arts colleges in the city have been growing and Madras university is pioneering a change,“ he said.
Educationists said this is a healthy trend given the poor employability of a section of engineering students. “Of the 600 or so engineering colleges, only 100 may actually be matching up the industry requirements which is disappointing students,“ said educationist Jayaprakash Gandhi. The other issue could be the fee range of engineering courses which is higher in comparison to arts and science courses, but didn’t necessarily guarantee employment opportunities.
