Normalcy has been restored at the Madipakkam lake which had been witnessing fish deaths for the last three days. Corporation officials on Saturday sprinkled oxygen granules into the lake after water filtration and waste disposal.

Managing trustee of Pratiks Enviro Foundation Dakshayani S Dalavai said, “We, along with corporation personnel, cleaned up the water and sprinkled oxygen granules. It is now the duty of the residents to make sure there is no encroachment, and dumping of garbage into the lake.“

S Pichamuthu, a resident of Iyappan Nagar, said, “It is heartening to note the role of NGOs and the city corporation in cleaning up the lake to stop the death of fish. Residents and the nearby Ayappan temple authorities should ensure that chemical-based effluents are not let into the lake. There is no point in praying to God when you cannot keep your surroundings clean.“

Dalavai said the fish had been dying because the oxygen level in the water was very low due to the excess sewage.

The Madipakkam police have been alerted to keep a look out for those who dump garbage, especially tankers which dump sewage into the lake.
