180 engg colleges fail to make the cut
With just 10 days left for counselling to begin, Anna University sent showcause notices to around 180 private engineering colleges for falling short of the criteria required for affiliation.
Around 50 colleges have been identified to have major shortfalls, and 130 colleges had minor shortfalls.
Based on a Supreme Court order, Anna University set up an inspection committee in February , and in spected all 539 colleges affiliated to it.
“As per the court order, we completed the inspection by May 15. A report was submitted by the inspection committee recently , and we have taken action accordingly,“ said a source in the university involved in the decision making process. A professor with knowl edge of the inspection committee’s recommendations said, “Around 50 institutions do not meet the important criteria required for affiliation. What is of most concern is the presence of an unqualified principal. Some institutions do not have qualified faculty members too.“ According to the norms, a principal of a college should be at the level of a professor and should have at least 15 years experience in teaching industry research. The other major shortcomings identified in these institutions include faculty shortage, lack of lab equipment and shortage of reference books and journals in the college library .
Besides these 50 institutions, the committee also mentioned about 130 colleges that fall short of minor criteria required to renew the affiliation with the university.
A professor involved in the process said, “In these colleges, one or two departments did not match the faculty-student ratio requirement (1:15) as one or two faculty resigned their jobs recently . In some cases, the institutions fell short of mi nor infrastructure requirement.“
Anna University has asked all these colleges to fulfill the requirement at the earlist. “We have asked them to take steps to fill the gaps, and submit a report to us after they are equipped with all requirements for affiliation. The report will be tabled in an expert committee meeting, and on approval, the university will renew the college’s affiliation,“ said a senior administrative official of Anna University .
Asked if the institutions had been given time to submit the report, the official said, “We asked them to complete the process at the earliest. Counselling will begin on June 27, and will go on for about a month. So the colleges should fulfil the requirement before they start the course for the first year.“
