Chennai Metro Rail has opened the St Thomas Mount station for the public, but Southern Railway is yet to complete the long-pending work to connect Velachery station with St Thomas Mount. The work has been stalled as the state government is engaged in a legal battle with local residents over land acquisition.
Only a 500m stretch in the final leg is pending, for which Southern Railway has already fixed contractors. “We can complete the pending work in 18 months if the land is acquired and given to us. We are also waiting for it,“ said a senior ra ilway official. St Thomas Mount was planned as an intersecting point for seamless travel through three modes of transport -Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), Chennai Beach-Tambaram suburban train route and the metro.
