Tiruttani-Velachery train services extended till Sep 3
The southern railway has extended operation of suburban trains from Tiruttani and Sulurpetta to Velachery MRTS section via Beach for three more weeks owing to good commuter patronage.
The 51 services which were supposed to be run on a trial basis till August 13, has now been extended till September 3.
It is estimated that more than 30,000 commuters coming from north and northwestern line switch trains at Beach to reach Velachery . The services began on July 25.
S Mohanram, former member of railway users consultative committee and a regular commuter, said, “Railways should make the trains permanent as patronage is good. There are several people who travel from Tiruvallur and Gummidipoondi to the heart of the city for work. The services are currently aimed at people who come to work in IT companies.“
He said that railways should also expedite a long-pending demand of suburban commuters to introduce a circular train service -BeachChengelpet-Tirumalpur-Arakonam-Tiruvallur-Beach.“This will be of help because a large number of people come from southern suburbs to the city. There are people who travel from Villupuram to Chennai daily for work. The plan is stuck because a small stretch on Tirumalpur-Arakonam route near INS Rajali in Arakonam is yet to be electrified,“ he added.
A senior railway officer said, “Several commuters have welcomed the services. There is good patronage. We are not able to make the trains permanent now because commuter data analysis should be sent to railway board for approval. The board has to give green signal to make a train service permanent.“
