The number of students registering for Anna University’s placement drive this year has shot up to more than 3,000 from about 2,500 last year. The varsity is also expecting the number of companies would also go up from 160 last year to 300 this time.
This year’s placement has also come with fatter packages. T Thyagarajan, director of Centre for University Industry Collaboration (CUIC), Anna University, said IT product companies increased their packages substantially this year with many offering `20 lakh, a jump of at least `3 lakh since last year. Three students from College of Engineering, Guindy campus, who were recruited by Hyderabad-based software development company Arcesium India, received a package of `28 lakh, the highest so far.This is higher than last year’s highest salary offer by Bengaluru’s Code Nation which gave `12 lakh.
Companies like Microsoft, Paypal, Amazon and Adobe are among those visiting the campus this year.The 300 companies include IT product companies, core engineering sector, manufacturing companies and startups. More than 15% of them are new companies.The range of packages varies from `3.5 lakh to `28 lakh. However, the placement cell said that it is too early to indicate any trends as the drive began on August 4 and is expected to go on till May . The varsity said it is ex pecting bulk recruitment from September. So far at least 80 students from across different streams have been placed.
To aid students in the placement process, a mock online test was conducted for which marks were awarded to students and shared so that they understand their aptitude and where they stand. For the first time, the varsity has also come out with a ready reckoner on specific topics like communication skills, HR skills, technical skills and group discussion preparations to be aware of company requirements.
A road show was also held with various companies and their profiles on display to give students a better understanding of the prospective employers. Soft skills training sessions are also being conducted through the placement season. Last year’s placement drive found jobs for 1,800 students.
