Despite having the capacity to bring down the journey time of trains from Chennai to southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala by around one hour, Southern Railway is reducing only around 20-30 minutes. This will reflect from October 1 when the new timetable takes effect, sources said.
The maximum decrease in journey time will be one hour ten minutes for the ChennaiRameswaram Sethu Express. The Chennai-Tiruchirapalli Rockfort Express will be faster by 30-40 minutes, ChennaiMadurai Pandian Express by 20 minutes and Chennai-Tirunelveli Nellai Express by 40 minutes. Other express trains like Pearl City Express and Ananthapuri Express will have a reduction of 20 minutes.
Southern railway general manager Vashishta Johri had announced in August that there would be at least a 30-minute cut in journey time for all trains, as the Chennai-Madurai doubling was nearing completion. The conservative approach of the zone has resulted in the non-completion of the 100-km stretch between Villupuram and Tiruchirapalli because of which officials from Tiruchirapalli and Madurai divisions have expressed reservations over speeding up of trains.
Insiders say that officials may revise the running time of these trains once again in December .
