Students, politicians and actors bid adieu to Jeppiaar
Students, teachers, politicians, film personalities and people from different walks of life paid tribute on Sunday to the founder-chancellor of Sathyabama University, Jeppiaar, who passed away here on Saturday after a sudden illness.
There was a steady stream of visitors to Sathyabama University where the mortal remains of the eminent educationist was kept through the day . AIADMK leader K N Ramachandran, former Union minister and DMK leader T R Baalu, actor R Sarathkumar, film director S A Chandrasekar and P Bharathiraja and film producer AVM Saravanan were among those who paid their respects to Jeppiaar. Speaking to reporters, Stalin said “He was an exemplary politician rendering much support to revered leader MGR. After keeping away from politics, he fo cussed on education for the masses. On behalf of DMK and the party’s chief Kalaignar, we pay our respects.“
Actor Rajesh who was witness to Jeppiaar’s meteoric rise as a politician said his quirks were many . “The story of how he caught MGR’s attention is legendary . In a desperate attempt to catch MGR’s attention at a rally , Jeppiaar threw his infant daughter towards MGR. MGR chided him for having tossed his daughter in the air, but nevertheless welcomed him into his fold,“ he said. For many students, the death was a great loss.“Just yesterday I saw him on campus when he distributed cash prizes for Class 10 passouts,“ said Srinidhi S, a Class 9 student of Jeppiaar Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
Srirang, a housekeeping staff at Sathyabama Universit said, “Jeppiaar brought a dozen of us from Trichy , provided us a livelihood and took care of our families as well.He used to say `you and your families will never go hungry while I am there’. He was an extraordinary person.“
