Byelections in Tamil Nadu have thrown up very little surprises for more than a decade. The deferred polls for Thanjavur and Aravakurichi and the bypoll in Tiruparankundram in Madurai district are no different. All three assembly segments have been won by the ruling AIADMK with comfortable margins. Puducherry is no exception to this trend where Congress candidate and chief minister V NArayanaswamy won the polls in Nellithope constituency , defeating AIADMK.
But what makes victory for AIADMK in the three segments stand apart is the fact that the campaign was muted. Party supremo J Jayalalithaa, who has for years been the star campaigner for the party , was hospitalised. All she could do was issue a statement urging the public to vote for her party.
DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi too didn’t hit the streets. But his son and party treasurer M K Stalin extensively campaigned posing a tough challenge for the ruling party .DMK men hoped that even if they conceded defeat, the victory margin would be low. The results have however belied their hopes. “The election commission had turned a blind eye to the irregularities committed by AIADMK. The huge number of votes bagged by DMK only show that AIADMK is heading towards amassive defeat in the coming days,” said Stalin.
