It is official now.Chennai will not have a woman mayor but the city will have more than 50% of women representation as councillors. This follows government’s decision to raise the reservation for women in municipal corporations from 33% to 50%.
The notification issued by the municipal administration department came as a surprise as the state left out the much-anticipated Greater Chennai Corporation’s mayoral post to a woman. The 328-year-old corporation has had only two women mayors and the last post was held in 1972. Corporations of Trichy , Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore and Vellore said. This political decision was kept under wraps for nearly a week, even as state election commission sources confirmed the names of the corporations few days ago in which Chennai had figured.
Explaining the rationale, (Reserved) will however have women mayors. Tirunelveli, Trichy and Vellore corporations would continue to see women heading the corporations for the second consecutive term, while Chennai and Salem represented by men have not been considered.
