The state election commission has hiked the ceiling of expenditure for candidates contesting the October civic polls by anywhere between 33% and 60%, depending on the category of local bodies. The expenditure limit of candidates in wards of corporations, barring Chennai, has been increased by 60%. The ceiling for Chennai wards has been increased to `90,000 from `56,250 in 2011.
The previous limit was fixed during the 2011 civic polls. With the state reverting to indirect election for mayors of corporations and chairpersons of municipalities and town panchayats this year, a tough contest is on the cards. The expenses are expected to shoot up from next week when the election dates would be notified by the commission. But the bigger challenge would be for the state election department to monitor the expenses of the large number of candidates in the fray.
